bothversions Fuel is used by engines to move ships. Fuel is created from Sorium, either by being converted in Fuel Refinery installations, or by being mined directly from gas giants by Sorium Harvester modules on ships. It is stored in Fuel Storage, or at any colony. In C#, it can be moved by ships with Refuelling System modules, known as tankers, or by any colony with a Spaceport or Refuelling Station installation. In VB6, it can be moved freely between ships and colonies that are located together, with no special equipment needed. Fuel is consumed by engines. Fuel efficiency is heavily linked to engine power (with lower-power engines being vastly more fuel-efficient), and it is somewhat linked to engine size (with larger engines being modestly more efficient). It can also be improved with Research. Generally, commercial vessels are designed to be fuel-efficient, since excessive fuel use by your freighters and survey ships can easily run an empire out of fuel. However, combat ships usually need higher power levels, so they tend to be relatively fuel-hungry. Players would be wise to ensure that their fuel stockpiles are large and that more fuel is being added constantly, because running out of fuel is devastating for an empire. Note that fuel can always be added by Mode if necessary, either directly into ship fuel tanks (which can include creating new ships for the purpose), or by adding Sorium to a planet that's being mined.
